Gold - Tips & Warning

  1. Always shop around for the best prices.
  2. Common date "slabbed" gold coins (MS 63, MS 64) will trade at approximately 15 to 20 percent above the bullion or "spot" price (MS 64 is a better investment).
  3. Common date silver dollars are best purchased in MS 64 or MS 65 grades.
  4. Inventory your acquisitions noting the years, mints, types and grades.
  5. If you can afford MS 65 or MS 66 grades, go for it!
  6. Never buy coins from a TV Show dealer or a flea market!
  7. Do not buy coins which are "slabbed" by other (mongrel) grading services.
  8. "Raw" coins are generally a "raw" deal, and you will lose on most exchanges!
  9. Never keep any precious metals or coins in your home. A safety deposit

Another Gold Facts

Gold is a beautiful and pure metal. It will not tarnish, rust, or corrode. While gold is considered to be very strong, it is also regarded as the most malleable of all metals.

Purity

Pure gold is soft and will not withstand the stresses of every-day wear. For this reason, gold is alloyed with a mixture of metals such as silver, copper, nickel, and zinc. This gives gold strength and durability.

Karatage

Karatage indicates gold purity or how much of the metal in a piece of jewelry is solid gold. Karatage is marked with a number followed by "k." This marks the exact purity of gold. Karatage is noted in 24ths. This means that a gold piece of 24k gold is actually 100% pure gold.

Color

Gold color is considered using two factors:

  1. The specific metal alloys included in the gold
  2. The percentage of each metal alloy found in the gold

Yellow Gold

In jewelry of all kinds, you can find 18k and 14k yellow gold. 18k gold contains a higher percentage of precious metal than 14k gold. It is made up of 75% gold, which is then alloyed with other metals. This is to assure that the piece will be strong enough to withstand everyday wear.

14k gold is made up of only 58.3% gold and 41.7% other metals. This gives the gold piece its strength. This means that the gold color for a 14k gold piece is not as rich as the 18k gold. 14k gold will be found more often in pieces where strength is most important, such as with earring backs and bracelet clasps.

More Gold Facts

The element for Gold is Au.

Gold is considered to be one of the first metals known to man.

It is the gold standard that defines our world's currency system.

Money represents a value in gold.

24 karat is 100% gold.

Too soft so not considered suitable for jewelry

22 karat is 91.7% gold

Again, too soft so not considered suitable for jewelry

18 karat is 75.0% gold

Used successfully in fine jewelry

14 karat is 58.3% gold

Used successfully in all jewelry

12 karat is 50.0% gold

Not used for jewelry

10 karat is 41.7% gold

his metal is the defined karat limit legally considered to be real gold in the United States.

Gold Jewelry

White Gold

18k white gold is 75% gold, and 14k white gold is 58.3% gold. You will find that the jewelry made from these metals have a slight yellow color. To further enhance the purity of whiteness in white gold, this metal is plated with rhodium. Rhodium is a shiny, white metal and is particularly hard. In some cases of wear, the rhodium plating will wear off some jewelry. This then reveals the original metal color. In such cases, re-plating can be done. This simple process will restore the jewelry's whiteness.

Rose Gold

Rose gold finds its color from a larger percentage of copper in the metal alloy. This gives the gold a very lovely pinkish color.

Pricing

The pricing of gold jewelry is defined by the purity of the gold used or by the karat weight of the piece. Pricing is further determined by the design and construction of each piece of jewelry.

Care

To avoid daily abrasions of your gold, be careful to keep your jewelry away from harsh chemicals like those found in chlorine and other caustic cleaning fluids. Doing this will prolong your gold jewelry's luster.

To clean your gold jewelry, simply use a solution of warm water and mild, detergent-free soap. Wash each gold piece gently using a soft-bristled brush or a new, soft toothbrush.

You can keep your gold pieces free of the harsh daily elements if you store them separately in soft cloth bags or in the original boxes.

Why Gold ?

Throughout history, gold has been a highly valued substance. It's unique properties and relative scarcity caused almost every world culture to use it as a form of money, as well as a way to "store" value. Although it has lost much of its importance as a form of currency, gold investments still provide a great way to protect your money and diversify a portfolio.

Over the past few years, gold prices have been steadily rising. There is a very good chance this trend will continue over the long-term, making it a good idea to put some money into gold investments now. Also, buying gold is a great way to hedge against other investments. Due to uncertainty in the stock market and the value of the US dollar, it's a good idea to put 10-20% of your money into a hedge fund in order to protect yourself. Gold and silver have always been considered to be among the best forms of hedge investments because they have relatively stable values (due to very small changes in supply).

Investing in Gold

For thousands of years, gold has been valued as a global currency, a commodity, an investment and simply an object of beauty. As financial markets developed rapidly during the 1980s and 1990s, gold receded into the background and many investors lost touch with this asset of last resort. Recent years have seen a striking increase in investor interest in gold. While a sustained price rally, underpinned by the fact that demand consistently outstrips supply, is clearly a positive factor in this resurgence, there are many reasons why people and institutions around the world are once again investing in gold. This website provides you with the background to these reasons and describes the defining characteristics of the gold market from an investor's point of view.

Gold

Gold (pronounced /ˈɡoʊld/) is a chemical element with the symbol Au (Latin: aurum) and an atomic number of 79. It has been a highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since the beginning of recorded history. The metal occurs as nuggets or grains in rocks, in veins and in alluvial deposits. Gold is dense, soft, shiny and the most malleable and ductile pure metal known. Pure gold has a bright yellow color and luster traditionally considered attractive, which it maintains without oxidizing in air or water. It is one of the coinage metals and formed the basis for the gold standard used before the collapse of the Bretton Woods system in 1971.
At the end of 2006, it was estimated that all the gold ever mined totaled 158,000 tonnes. [1] This can be represented by a cube with an edge length of just 20.2 meters. Modern industrial uses include dentistry and electronics, where gold has traditionally found use because of its good resistance to oxidative corrosion and excellent quality as a conductor of electricity.
Chemically, gold is a transition metal and can form trivalent and univalent cations upon solvation. Compared with other metals, pure gold is more chemically unreactive, but it is attacked by aqua regia (a mixture of acids), forming chloroauric acid, and by alkaline solutions of cyanide but not by single acids such as hydrochloric, nitric or sulfuric acids. Gold dissolves in mercury, forming amalgam alloys, but does not react with it. Since gold is insoluble in nitric acid which will dissolve silver and base metals, this is exploited as the basis of the gold refining technique known as "inquartation and parting". Nitric acid has long been used to confirm the presence of gold in items, and this is the origin of the colloquial term "acid test", referring to a gold standard test for genuine value.
